Mead is the most sustainable alcoholic beverage that most have never heard of.
In its simplest form, mead is made from a mixture of honey & water then fermented with yeast just like wine. Unlike wine though, honey production has a very small footprint. There is no uprooting of land, irrigation or use of chemicals. It is simply placing the bees in an adequate environment where they can forage on what Mother Nature has already provided them.
The more demand there is for mead, the more demand there is for honey. Mead making works hand in hand with local agriculture. As bees do their part in helping to pollinate 1/3 of every bite of food we eat, every bottle of mead produced helps keep our apiaries and their hives alive by putting money back into agricultural operations that we heavily rely upon.
The sweetest thing about mead is a lot more meaningful than just a beautifully crafted glass of mead.
As mead makers, we are tasked with capturing the liquified history of nectar foraged from millions of flowers, and celebrating that miracle of nature by sharing it with the world in a glass.
The individual bees and flowers that produced the honey we use have since vanished from this Earth, but the product of their efforts and existence are left with us to preserve forever in a bottle.
It is our responsibility to respect the honey and the bees, because without them, mead simply could never exist.
